Our NuWave Brio 3 Qt, 6 Qt & 10 Qt Digital Air Fryer Review
The NuWave Brio Digital Air Fryer is an electric air fryer which can be seen advertised on television and online. Advertising for the product highlights the fact that you can make foods with fried taste and crunch but without the use of oils. This results in healthier “fried” options for the consumer.
Brio Design & Ease Of Use
The design of NuWave Brio allows food to be cooked from all angles, meaning you shouldn’t have to flip or rotate during the cooking process. This is achieved via an inner basket which is enclosed in an outer basket. As food cooks, grease and fat will drip into the outer reservoir. Both baskets insert into the unit like a drawer and are pulled out together with a handle.
Once removed from the unit, you can separate the inner basket by flipping up a small black protector to reveal a button that allows you to remove the inner basket. Some consumers have said that this small piece is flimsy and has snapped off, so you’ll want to be careful when handling it.
A chart is given for cooking times, and we found it to be accurate, although you’ll probably need to fine tune it to your own needs. Most food we tried turned out crispy in a relatively short amount of time. Although you don’t technically need any oil, you may find that adding a small amount (maybe a teaspoon to a tablespoon) will help keep food moist and prevent it from drying out.
The Brio uses a digital display, so you can accurately set the time and temperature. It takes up about the same amount of counter space as a coffee pot, so it won’t be a large and intrusive addition to your kitchen. Depending on how many people you need to feed, the size may or may not be an issue. For two people, the Brio 3 Qt or the 6 Qt should produce more than enough food with one batch. If you need to feed a larger family, you’ll want to consider the 6 Qt or the 10 Qt.

Brio LED Controls
The NuWave Brio Air Fryer comes with brilliant LED controls that can help you regulate how your food is cooked by just the press of a button. You will be able to use these controls to change the temperature and settings, as to how you want your food to be cooked. The Air Fryer LED control screen also enables you to operate the fryer even under low lighting conditions. And it has a sleep design, which rids you of the hassle of using switches and nozzles.
Brio Cooking Efficiency
NuWave’s Brio Air Fryer is designed to give you the most efficient and delicious cooking. It does not require the use of any oil and so it gives you a taste of even healthier cooking. It comes with a pre-heat feature that automatically pre-heats the machine even before you have put in your food, so that you can accurately measure the temperature inside the fryer for a better controlled cooking experience. You can control at what temperature your food is cooked on by regulating it from 100-degree Fahrenheit to 390 degree Fahrenheit, in five degree increments. The food that you cook inside this fryer will be cooked equally and dynamically as per your needs and at a faster rate than any other type of fryer.
While looking for information on the NuWave Brio I came across a review that had tested the machine by cooking different products and this is what they had to say:
“While many of the air fryers we tested had some great features, the NuWave Brio combined the most of those features into one appliance to outshine the competition. The Brio was able to churn out batch after batch of crispy fries and chicken wings during our tests. The final results were almost perfect. There were just a few spots that were a little lighter or darker, depending on the batch, but this air fryer was impressive for its consistently crispy and evenly cooked results overall.
This air fryer had the best controls of all the ones we tested. We set it up and started making food quickly. It was noticeably easy to use in almost every way. Details like a built-in cord wrap to cut down on clutter and a chime that informs you when the basket is in place and ready to cook are part of what sets it apart from other air fryers. It was hard to tell if the basket was in the right spot in other air fryers.
You get many extras with this unit, including a baking pan and muffin cups so you can make desserts in addition to snacks and meats. There are also additional racks to facilitate roasting and grilling. Since the Brio is much more compact than your oven, and most toaster ovens, it can do all of these tasks very quickly, albeit in limited quantities.
The NuWave was easy to use but not so easy to clean. The air fryers that prepared the crispiest and most evenly cooked chicken and fries were the ones with wire baskets – like this one – instead of thick metal baskets with large holes cut out of them. Unfortunately, the wire basket ones were harder to clean. We struggled and scraped at first but then decided to soak them all for a bit.
The Brio’s basket was still harder to clean than a lot of others, but the crispy food it produced was worth it. Although we cleaned it by hand, this basket can go in the dishwasher and I am sure that a little oven cleaner would help.
One other drawback is the Brio is pretty loud. There were a couple others that were louder, but this one was noticeably noisy. It is not something you would think of right away when preparing to purchase an air fryer, especially since deep-fat fryers are loud too, but it is somewhat annoying to have to talk over the Brio. If you prefer an air fryer that generates less noise, consider the Power Fryer.
The Brio is great in terms of safety considerations. It shuts itself off at the end of a cycle and stays securely in place thanks to skid-resistant feet. In our tests, it remained cool to the touch, even when it was mid-cycle.
Perhaps the biggest “con” with the NuWave Brio is that many of the highlighted examples include the use of optional accessories which cost extra. Many of the examples you see on television use these accessories, which can ramp up your cost if you were to buy them all.

There are different parts and accessories available for anyone who purchases the unit. Safety covers are simple devices that cover the basket. Said safety covers keep you from accidentally pressing the demounting button when you are trying to remove your basket.
Silicone Trivet is a large mat used to protect the tabletop or counter top from heat. After you cook using this unit you can place your hot basketwork based tray on this product. It is dishwasher safe and alleviates the risk of damaging your counters.
You also get silicone cupcake liners which are perfect for making small quiches, eggs, cornbread, cupcakes, or brownies. The cupcake liners are reusable and oven safe. You can simply put in your mixture without adding butter or oil.
Five-piece utensil sets are durable and dishwasher safe. They are made from nylon with a silicone handle. All of these utensils let you flip, mix, stir, and work across any cooking surface. There is also a built-in counter rests at the end of the utensils never come into direct contact with the counter top, so they are always clean. Inside the set you will find a spoon, spatula, ladle, slotted spoon, and tongs.
Baking pans allow you to make things like vegetables, eggs, casseroles, and even mac & cheese inside of the air fryer.
The grill pan is ideal for steaks, pork chops, shrimp, or anything else that you want to see her on the outside to keep juicy and tender on the inside. Due to the fact that you do not cook over an open flame or wood smoke you get a barbecue taste without the extra carcinogens. Again, the dishwasher safe nonstick design means that no unhealthy oils have to be added to the unit when you are cooking.

Overall, we think the NuWave Brio is a fine addition to the air fryer market. As we said before, if you plan to use it primarily for one or two people, consider the 3 Qt or 6 Qt and for a family the 6 Qt or 10 Qt.

Video – NuWave Brio Air Fryer/ No Oil Needed Review and Recipe
“I went to the big-box store today, thinking I’d buy a different brand of air fryer (because their marketing was so impressive), but they were out of the medium-size cooker. Hence, I bought this one, which was cheaper anyway. Used it immediately to make french fries from scratch, and sweet potato fries from scratch. Tasted great! You only need a tablespoon of oil! You don’t technically need oil at all, but the food might be too dry without it. The whole process was so much more convenient than the convection oven, and the convection oven takes longer to cook the food. I’m thankful not to have to use the convection oven, or a large pot of oil, to fry up one russet potato from now on. I can have fries with every lunch (which is usually a wrap sandwich or burrito). In the future, I’ll be frying chicken and will update my review.
Update September 17: I air-fried falafels in this cooker. Delicious! I’ll never go back to deep-fried falafels (which defeats the purpose of a healthy vegetarian substitute for meat). The falafels become brown and crispy, and that smell of “falafels cooking” fills the kitchen, without the vat of oil! Cook the falafels at 370, for 10 minutes; no need to turn them, because they’ll stick to the grate until fully cooked.
I fried some chicken breast. Indeed, crispy on the outside, moist inside. I’ll have to adjust temperature and time, because I cooked them too long. Cleaning: After several uses, the cooking surface became coated with a sticky residue (the very little oil that I did use stuck to the “non-stick” surface). I called NuWave and was advised to use a non-abrasive brush to clean the residue off. I only had a hard-bristle cleaning brush in the kitchen, so I used that, and the residue scrubbed off easily enough.
This cooker does falafels and french fries just the way I like them. If healthy cooking is a priority for you, you’ll probably find endless uses for this cooker.
Update September 22: Just did french fries from scratch again, but this time used the double-cooking method that restaurants use. I cut several Yukon Gold potatoes into french fry shapes, soaked them in water for half an hour to remove excess starch, then dried on a kitchen towel. I used a tablespoon of oil to coat the fries and salted them just slightly. Placed in the air-fryer at 360 for the first-cook phase (they were still limp, not fully cooked through). Then I cooled the fries, placed in a ziplock bag, and froze them.
After they were fully frozen, I cooked one serving of the frozen fries at 360 for 8-10 minutes. I checked on them halfway, and they “looked like” golden-brown french fries; salted them slightly again at this stage. They turned out delicious, much better than my deep-fried french fries from scratch! I’ll never go back to deep-frying french fries. Previous deep-fried french-fry attempts: I could never produce McD’s crispiness, and the fries would go soggy after a half-hour anyway. (McD’s always double-cooks; their fries are delivered to the restaurants frozen. I thought it would be a hassle to double-cook, but not with this air fryer.)
Update October 12: Uploaded a photo of my buttermilk-brined, air-fried chicken (breaded chicken thighs, 30 minutes at 360). Next time, I’ll place foil over the chicken at 20 minutes, to prevent burning. I’ll never go back to KFC! Tastier (more wholesome-tasting) than KFC. No “cardboard” chicken taste, and so much healthier than deep-fried! Air-fried tastes better, in my opinion. Very easy to cook, just brush the brined, breaded chicken with a tablespoon of oil and place in the air fryer. When the chicken goes into the air-fryer, I never thought they would turn out “looking” like real fried chicken or tasting so wholesome.
Update October 14: Tried this recipe again, with the foil after 20 minutes. The foil swooshed up into the heating element! So rather than using the foil, I turned the chicken, so that the underside would cook. Results were great! Both sides cook evenly, and become crispy, if you turn the chicken pieces.
Update October 14: My double-cooked french fries. I used russet potatoes, instead of the Yukon Gold. The russets turned out crunchier!
Update December 3: This cooker does burgers to go with the fries, in a healthy way. Mix seasonings into the ground beef, and form into burgers. Place in the cooker, and cook at 360 for about 10 minutes, depending on the number of burgers (only two or three will fit at one time). Check the burgers at 8 minutes; without checking the internal temperature, I’ll stop the cooking when the burgers are domed and “look” mouth-watering. When cleaning the cooker afterwards, there might be globs of unhealthy-looking drippings beneath the grate in the pan. You might have consumed the unhealthy globs inadvertently, if you had cooked the burger on the stovetop! My kitchen no longer fills with smoke when I cook burgers!” …. Read More
“I LOVE this air fryer. We are a family of 5, so I needed something large to cook enough for everyone. I can absolutely cook enough for everyone in this. There were a lot of product reviews about closing it being difficult. I did not find this to be the case at all. – You need 2 hands to open it, (which sometimes being a mom of little ones, you don’t always have) – 1 hand to close the lid, and 1 hand to pull the pin. It’s not difficult. In addition to healthy frying option, I have noticed that some foods that we love to grill, come out better in this, such as turkey burgers, and zucchini.” …. Read More
