Our Ninja 1550-Watt Air Fryer AF101 Review

The Ninja Air Fryer is the top-of-the-line unit. This 4 Qt capacity Air Fryer is design for a family of 3 to 5 people. This fryer offers many options that are not found on standard units. Some of these features include 4 presets to determine the type of cooking you will do. You have air fryer setting, roast setting, dehydration setting, and reheat setting. These settings allow you to change the amount of time and temperature to best suit the style of cooking you are going to do. The basket and the crisper plate are ceramic coated for durability.

The Ninja AF101 Air Fryer is a 2018 release air fryer with a sleek and modern design, 1550-watt power, a programmable base, an extra-large 4-quart size basket with a ceramic coating for air frying, reheating, dehydrating, roasting and baking for your whole family. You can basically put two pounds of French fries in its decent size basket without adding any oil and get great results.

You can use little to no oil when cooking or frying foods in this brand-new Ninja and your meal will have roughly 75% less oil than conventional frying methods. This is not just a random guess but a result of a test in which they compared the hand-cut fries in the air fryer vs. a deep fryer. This means you’ll enjoy the exact same taste and the golden crispy texture with much less oil and calories, without feeling any guilt.

The temperature range is specified as 105°F–400°F, and you can get rid of the moisture in your ingredients slowly, fry or cook them quickly with the equally and quickly distributed convection heat. It comes with a large 4-quart size nonstick basket with a ceramic coating and a crisper plate where you can fit up to 900 grams of fries.

The low temperature and low fan speed available on this air fryer allow you to use it as a dehydrator to make tasty and healthy, flat chip-like dried foods on the multi-layer rack included in the package. You can make beef jerky, dried fruits and veggies and more. It is easy to clean overall and the multi-layer rack, the crisper plate and the frying basket are all safe to be put in the dishwasher. You can roast chicken, veggies, beef, casseroles and more without needing to use your large oven. If you have any leftover chicken wings, pizza, fries or other meals from yesterday you can reheat and revive them to their original taste and texture.

Ninja AF101 Design

The Ninja AF101 is easy on the eyes with a modern design, weighs 13.14 pounds and measures 8.5 x 12.1 x 11 inches. It is lightweight enough and you can store it in the kitchen cupboard or keep it on the counter as it looks good. The basket has a non-stick teflon-like, FDA approved, PTFE-free ceramic coating, it is easy to clean, and you won’t find any plastic inside. The single-touch LED-backlit control panel has the Time up and down, and Temperature up and down to control time and temp manually, 4 programmable cooking functions of Air Fry, Roast, Reheat, Dehydrate, Power and Start/Pause.

Ninja AF101 Dehydrating

The dehydrator function is a great addition to the versatility of the Ninja Air Fryer AF101. The 105°F temperature setting in the gentle air movement through the machine will make great fruit slices that are crisp and without cooking your fruit. You can also make jerky and not have to add all of the salt and sugar the manufactured jerky has. The dehydrator setting adds a different dimension that most other air fryers don’t have.

Ninja AF101 Ceramic Coating

Both the basket and the grill plate are coated with a nonstick ceramic coating. This coating is both PTFE and PFOA free. It can withstand heats of over 800°F. This is the upscale non-stick surface for air fryers. Ceramic coatings are made from inert materials. So, you will not find any of the chemicals that are associated with Teflon coatings. It will not scratch like Teflon either, but you can shatter it that is why it is recommended to use wood or plastic utensils.

I recommend you season the surface with canola oil before your first use. This will help maintain your non-stick surface for a longer time. If you place in the dishwasher you should re-season as the harsh chemicals take the seasoning away. This is the reason I do not recommend placing these items in the dishwasher. If you maintain the surface it will last a long time for you.

With the high-temperature rating of 800°F, your air fryer will never reach that temperature. If for some reason it does reach that temperature it will not release any gases that are harmful as it is made of inert material. As you can see Ninja has provided the best coating for your basket and grill plate.

Ninja AF101 Cooking Surfaces

The Ninja AF101 does not vent hot air through the bottom of the unit. This will allow you to place it on any countertop as there is no heat coming out the bottom. With other units that vent through the bottom, you run the risk of discoloring your countertop or worse having countertop joints come apart. This is another strong point for this Ninja Air Fryer model as you have more options to place it in your kitchen.

Ninja AF101 Crisp Plate

The use of a crisp plate is unique among most of the air fryers. This plate is placed at the bottom of the basket to help circulate hot air through your food. The crisp plate and the dual baskets keep your food separate from any oils and or juices that come off of your food.

The advantage of a crisp plate instead of dual baskets is so the crisp plate will not accidentally separate from the basket dropping hot basket and juice on the floor. This is a great safety feature that will keep a hot pan and fat from spilling onto you and/or your floor. But you will have to use tongs or other utensils to remove the food from the basket. This is a minor inconvenience and is better than having scalding juices flying around your kitchen.

Ninja AF101 Settings

The presets for the Ninja Air Fryer AF101 are set up differently than most air fryers. There are four presets for this unit. Each of these presets are designated for the type of cooking you are going to do.

  • Air Fryer
  • Roast
  • Dehydrate
  • Reheat

The temperature settings for air frying, roasting and reheating is 150°F to 400°F. The temperature setting for dehydrating is 105°F to 400°F. The temperature ranges are normal for or your standard air fryer. The dehydration setting started 105°F which is low enough to remove the moisture from your food and not cook it. The time settings are quite different with each category having its own time set up.

  • Air Fry: 1-minute increments up to 1 hour.
  • Roast: 1-minute increments for the first hour, followed by 5-minute increments for the next 3 hours.
  • Dehydrate 15-minute increments up to 12 hours.
  • Reheat: 1-minute increments up to 1 hour.

These settings turn your ninja air Fryer AF101 from a standard unit into one of the premier air fryers. Just being able to roast items for three hours makes it a wonderful cooking appliance and adds loads of versatility. The added dehydration feature makes this a wonderful air fryer to have. There’s nothing I love better than going for a long hike in the woods and eating my homemade jerky with my dog!

With the Ninja Air Fryer AF101, you choose the type of cooking you are going to do and then set your time and temperature. Using this type of setup, you have more versatility instead of predetermined times that don’t work well.

Ninja AF101 Cooking

You won’t get a cookbook included in the box, but some suggestions in the user manual and on the sticker on the unit with the recommended time and temperature for different food groups. It won’t get hot on your counter, the bottom, the top and the handles will stay cool. A small turkey will not fit in this air fryer, but a chicken or turkey pieces will, and the taste and texture will surely be awesome.

One of the customers cooked turkey breast in this one and it turned out great even though how dry and low-fat turkey breast is. You’re recommended to use the crisper plate to lift the food in the basket, so the air goes underneath and crisps food evenly. The tater tots, chicken wings and French fries are tender inside and crispy on the outside. It will cook your steak nicely, tender and moist inside and seared as well on the crisper plate.

You can cook fish, chicken, tater tots, sweet potato fries and more in much less time than a toaster oven. You may want to check what you’re doing in the middle of cooking just like you would with an oven. Ingredients may get stuck together or not cook properly if you turn them over or shake. It is easy to use straight out of the box and seems to offer decent value for the dollar.

Ninja AF101 Features To Be Aware Of

When You Shake The Food, It Does Not Auto Pause – Unlike the features that most air fryers have, this fryer doesn’t have an automatic pause when you pull the basket out to shake or turn over your food. You have to manually push the pause button in order for the unit to stop while you do your food manipulation. This could be an energy waster because the unit is open and trying to heat the whole kitchen. Please remember that when shaking the basket and any accessories that are in the basket, they are extremely hot and can burn you or your countertops if not properly protected.

Don’t Touch The Sides During Cooking – The sides of the unit get hot while cooking so when cooking with your air fryer make sure there’s enough ventilation and that nothing flammable is around. Make sure you have the proper clearances so the unit can breathe and not overheat.

12 Recipe Guide Is Not Enough – A recipe guide with 12 recipes is not enough information for a premium air Fryer. Other premium air fryers companies provide recipe books of 50 to 100 recipes. They also throw in an Air Frying Cooking Chart that gives you a good idea on how to cook many different types of food. This is one area of the Ninja Air Fryer AF101 that is disappointing. (Click the link in the whats in the box section above to find a 100-recipe book downloadable as a PDF file)

Only One Rack – The one drawback that this machine has, is that it only comes with one rack. With the size of the rack, you are hard-pressed to do any normal quantities of food. You may need to purchase at least two more racks to increase the quantity of food you wish to do.

Spacing Rack Too Large for Herbs – The other problem I see is the rack spacing is too large for small leaf herbs. I would purchase some food grade high-temperature mesh that I could cut to the same sizes of the rack. The unit’s designers had a great idea by adding dehydration to this unit, but they needed to think things through to make it functional.

Overall, you’re going to be hard-pressed to find another air fryer that is going to give you the range that the Ninja 1550-Watt Air Fryer AF101 gives you. It really is unique as it allows you to vary the time according to the type of cooking you are doing. The dehydrating and the crisping plate features put this air fryer right up there with the best. For the money well worth buying.

Ninja Air Fryer AF101 Customer Reviews

“Been studying air fryers for about two years. Decision was about counters-pace vs basket size. The ninja takes up slightly less space than the stand mixer. It’s lightweight and easy to pull out from under the cabinet to use (to allow for air flow). I like it so much, I wish for a bigger one just to do my entire meal in it at once. For two people, it does a fair amount of wings or tater tots, or the sweet potato fries pictured here.

I used the reheat function and the bang bang shrimp came out quite tasty. Steaks came out moist and medium rare, but not seared even on the crisper plate. It has worked well with salmon and chicken breasts. So much easier to clean than a pan and my stove top. It cooked those breaded chicken rounds, fish, and tater tots and in about 10 minutes. Much less time than a toaster oven. The Ninja does not come with added attachments for the grilling or baking as the Phillips, but it’s $200 less. Nuff said.” …. Read More

“I try not to eat fried food and I never thought I was missing out by not having a deep fryer, so an air fryer just seemed replacement that I didn’t need. So I was skeptical about how much I would use this… maybe a few frozen tater tots or fries for the kids. But oh my goodness I want to use this for everything. I like to think of this as a personal sized convection oven on steroids. Veggie burgers crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Roasted vegetables, fish sticks, chicken, burgers, fries, fish all with about 30-40% shorter cook times than the oven and only a 3 minute preheat time (vs 6-10 oven minutes).

This would be perfect for dorms or couples who want to eat something other than microwaved mush. It’s also perfect for families who want a better way to make “fried” sides like fries, mozzarella sticks, or chicken strips. The clean up is so much easier than cookie sheets. The tub and the browning air fry tray both have a very nice non stick coating making cleanup as simple as a rinse and a wipe.

So cons… hmm that’s a hard one. The biggest cons are that you may want to get a few extra kitchen tools like silicon tipped tongs to toss or flip your food and maybe a small 7″ pan for baking if you like the idea of making this your primary oven too. Also you will need to get a feel for how much faster this cooks so you don’t overcook your food, but checking on the food is easy and just a peak away. Once you get your timing right setting the controls is super easy and the timer turns it off automatically and you don’t have to worry about a lot of carry over heat like you do in an oven.

OVERALL… I highly recommend it, the Ninja controls are just as simple and intuitive on this as it is on my Ninja blender, it super easy to clean, and it cooks nearly everything fabulously.” …. Read More

“With all the hype floating around about air fryers, I was interested to see if they would live up to it all. I was really pleasantly surprised! I do a lot of cooking, but also work a full time job, which means I have little time to make dishes that really impress me. In nearly every way, this fryer has upended that reality and changed my life!

It has adjustable temperature and time settings which accommodate pretty much any kind of cooking you would do – dehydrating, reheating, roasting, and frying. I hardly ever use my stove or oven anymore, because using this Ninja air fryer is so much quicker and more efficient. And there are fewer dishes to be cleaned when it’s all over! Since it heats things with air, I use so much less oil in my cooking. The food does taste a bit *healthier* than it used to, but that’s pretty much a necessary tradeoff when you’re trying to eat better.

I love how big the bottom basket is, and I’m able to fit two pounds of tofu and some veggies in there without having it spill over the top or cook unevenly. The machine is really sleek and the parts are all easy to wash, ensuring that you’ll return to use it time and time again. My only complaint is that the unit is pretty loud (kind of like a dehydrator), so best to do all your air frying before guests arrive for a holiday party.” …. Read More
