VERDICT

It’s really the combination of all the little things that make Breville’s BOV900BSS Smart Oven Air so great, including the quality, fit, and finish, and a magnetic slide-out rack that works well. The inside of the door is smooth, and the crumb tray is sturdy, making cleaning easy. The appliance comes with a solid accompaniment of accessories and the optional bamboo cutting board. You can also purchase other accessories such as air fry baskets.

If you’re looking for a countertop oven that can replace your range and can double as a toaster, the Smart Oven Air takes the already versatile toaster oven, refines it, teaches it new tricks, and dresses it up to blend comfortably into any modern kitchen.

If you’re interested in air frying but want to invest in an appliance that can perform an array of other cooking tasks too, you might want to consider the Breville BOV900BSS The Smart Oven Air. This feature-rich stainless-steel countertop oven comes with a backlit digital display for selecting from 10 preset functions: toast, bagel, broil, bake, roast, warm, pizza, proof, air fry, reheat, cookies, slow cook and dehydrate. It’s enormous, touting a one cubic foot interior that will hold 9 slices of bread, a 5-quart Dutch oven, or a 13″ by 9″ roasting pan. So, lets have a closer look.

Our Breville BOV900BSS The Smart Oven Air Review

Breville BOV900BSS Smart Oven Air

This week I’ve been testing the new Breville BOV900BSS Smart Oven Air. It has exceeded my expectations in every way and so far as not only does this oven look great on the counter, it doesn’t take up too much space, and the versatility of this oven is amazing. And the new industrial design is timeless and will fit in with any style.

This is really a true oven that can cook anything that your main oven can, even a 14lb turkey, but with more efficiency. The interior of this oven is huge, measuring 16 inches wide by 12 inches deep, and 7 inches high, giving you more room for tall loaves of bread or cooking roasts without touching the top elements. There’s one extra element on top, making 6 quartz elements in total. The 8 rack positions offer a range of heights for cooking a variety of different sized foods and will easily fit a large dutch oven.

The range of functions on this model makes it much more versatile than the Smart Oven Pro, now with 13 different modes. In addition to the 10 modes found on the Pro, the Air adds nifty features such as a proofing mode, giving you a proper way to rise dough for perfect baking results. They’ve also added a dehydration feature, letting you dehydrate a variety of foods such as fruit snacks or beef jerky, and lets you dehydrate up to four trays at a time. The new Super Convection mode boosts the fan speed enabling crisper results and faster cooking speed than ever before, and I’ve had nothing but good results so far.

Most interesting is the Air Frying mode. Not only does this eliminate the need for a separate appliance, this is a great way to cook frozen snack foods like fries and onion rings, evenly browning and crisping perfectly.

Baking in this oven is precise and yields consistent results. Cookies came out evenly browned all around. I roasted a chicken that came out amazing, using the new phase cook feature. Phase Cook allows you to set two back-to-back cooking functions, so you can for example quickly crisp and brown the outside of a roast and automatically switch to a lower, slower cooking method for the remainder of the time. Also new, is a Rotate reminder, that alerts you half way through to turn the pan around for the best most even results. I really found that helpful, especially for times when I’m using two racks at once.

With all the baking and roasting this oven does, it’s easy to forget that it also functions as a 9-slice toaster! This oven puts heat exactly where it’s needed, providing the most even toasting I’ve seen. Bagels were browned on top while the bottoms remained soft and lightly toasted. And if you just finished toasting a bagel or making toast and the oven is still hot, then it’s smart enough to adjust the cooking time if you want to make more, so your toast is always the same colour whether you start with a cold or hot oven. A bagel took about 6 minutes with a cold oven, and when I wanted to toast another it took just over 3 minutes. This oven does take slightly longer to toast than the smart oven pro, but only about a minute longer.

Some of the negative reviews that were given for the Smart Oven Pro were regarding the control panel failing… so, in the BOV900BSS Smart Oven Air, Breville added a cooling fan inside the control panel to keep the sensitive electronics safe from overheating and prolonging the life of the oven, and they’ve upped the warranty to two years instead of one. Although the fan is annoying, if it helps keep the oven working longer, I am sure you can live with it.

I could go on forever about this oven, so, not to bore you too much, I’ll just list the things I liked and disliked the most.

Things I liked most about this oven:

-Light comes on when you open the door.
-Timer pauses when door is opened.
-Beeping sound level is adjustable and can be silenced completely.
-Seal on door wraps all around to keep more heat in, increasing efficiency.
-Oven Door stays open 1 to 4 inches without the need to prop it open.
-The thick, high-quality racks.
-Broiling feature works better than the Pro.
-Auto-eject for the toast and air fry levels.
-New magnetic rack-puller design.
-New fan design moves more air.
-Big, bright display is easy to read and interpret.
-2 racks instead of one.
-fits a 11lb roast turkey comfortably and gives amazing results.
-Bakes two pies at once or two sheets of cookies and reminds you to rotate half way.
-Heats to within 10 degrees of set temperature.
-Proofing feature is a huge convenience.
-Phase Cook for combining two cooking cycles into one.

Breville BOV900BSS Smart Oven Air Functions

Dislikes

-Convection Fan is a little loud especially in super mode and the front panel fan is a little loud and comes on any time the oven is activated, even in toast mode where the fan isn’t really necessary.
-Takes longer to reach temperature, approx 20 minutes to reach 400F.
-No recipe book – I wish there was a book of recipes designed for this specific oven that take advantage of the Phase Cook feature, dehydration and other features.

BOV900BSS Smart Oven Air Ease Of Use

Ease of use is an important item when most people shop for appliances. Sure, everything we look at these days has a ton of things it can do but, in most cases, trying to get anything done is so complex that the manual has to stay very close unless it’s something that you do every day. The controls here are laid out in such a way that makes sense and like most things that come home with us, I try them out without looking at the manual first.

Here I was able to pretty much use every feature without the manual. Something that I like with the controls, you can alter and change settings while in use and without disturbing the current function. With other ovens, making a change necessitated stopping the current program and then restarting with the new one. Something new to me with a counter top oven, when using a rack in the center slot there are magnets on either side of the door window. As the door open it draws the rack out far enough so that it’s easy to get at it for removal or for checking the cooking progress.

BOV900BSS Smart Oven Air Accessories

You will appreciate that it comes loaded with enough accessories to get you through almost anything you would want to do in a counter top oven. This is the first oven that I have seen that has enough racks to fill every slot. The drying rack is a nice touch and is used for air frying. The actual oven is large enough to get a good-sized turkey into it. Not big enough that it would feed a family of 20 but I have done a 5 KG turkey and had a lot of room to spare. The 5 quartz heating elements provide more than adequate coverage from top and bottom to get every area of the turkey nicely browned.

Included Accessories:

13” nonstick pizza pan.
13”x9” enamel baking pan.
Stainless steel roasting rack.
(2) Heavy duty oven racks.
AirFry/Dehydrate mesh basket.

BOV900BSS Smart Oven Air Cleaning

For clean up the oven design makes it easy. The drip sheet which covers the entire bottom is easily pulled out and washed off. Its light weight and it slides back into the oven as easily as it was removed. The only thing that I found was a little difficult to clean are the two bottom heating elements. They have protective bars on either side which limit the access to each side of the element for wiping down. Its not something that keeps them from being cleaned, it just makes things a little more difficult.

Who’s The Breville BOV900BSS Smart Oven Air for?

I think this Breville oven is for serious cooking, a bit overkill for a college student for example. It is really a real oven that can be used as a toaster oven. If you think you will need a second oven at times, this is a great option. Actually, this oven would make the ultimate wedding gift for newlyweds as they need a lot of different appliances when just starting out.

Breville BOV900BSS Smart Oven Air Customer Reviews

“Prior to purchasing this oven, I read all of the bad reviews and some of the good reviews, and some of the ‘middle’ reviews as I always do to see what the issues are and if those issues are show-stoppers. I love this little oven, but as a long-time user of counter top convection and toaster ovens, I need to state the following: ALL counter top convection ovens, as well as toaster ovens, get hot on the outside. It is not particular to this model or brand. If you have little hands in your house that might get burned, consider this before you buy ANY toaster or convection oven.

ALL convection ovens/toaster ovens will smoke if you do not keep them clean. You will be burning grease and crumbs and such from previously cooked food. Convection ovens release steam sometimes. If it is smoke, clean it. If it is steam, it is normal. You do not have to stand there at immediate guard to shove your food in when the oven is preheated because the timer will start counting down as soon as the oven is preheated. The Time button is the last button on the right. Just turn the time button to the right to get back to the cooking time if you happen to miss it.

I love this oven. I wrestled with whether to buy this model or the cheaper Pro version. I wanted the greater temperature accuracy, the phase cooking, and the dough proof function of this model. I also wanted to try some of the other functions that I have never used before like the air frying and the dehydrate. There are reviewers who have knowledge of these functions and can compare and contrast. I cannot speak to these.

I really like this oven. The phase cooking feature is wonderful. I don’t have to remember to come back and turn the oven down after I have cooked something on high temperature to get crispy outside and moisture inside. I just tell the oven to do it and walk away. Wonderful! I love the digital timer. My last convection oven had knobs to set temperature and cooking times. This only get you ‘around’ the time and temp you need. I love that the oven, like my big oven, has a preheating function and beeps when the oven is preheated. The oven is very easy to keep clean.

The oven is door is marked to tell you which position to put the oven rack based on the function you are using. I enjoy this feature and need to get used to it. My baked goods are crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, my roast chicken is the same, my frozen pizza is, well, frozen pizza, but it turns out great for what it is. The oven knows its frozen because it has a button to tell the oven that what you are cooking is frozen. Fabulous.

The instruction manual isn’t stellar, but the oven itself is user friendly enough that I’m not sure it needs to be. I am very pleased with my purchase.” …. Read More
